Breeds in riparian woods of Ural river, in south to Kozhekharovo - Budarino, and also about Urda village. On migration and in winter observed in south to Atyrau, Uil and lower Emba valleys. One bird recorded from mid January to early April 2004 at Dokuchaevka and small flock registered 4 October 2004 on Batpakkol lake. Two birds caught on Zhalauly lake in lower of Turgay river 8-10 October 1975, and flock of 15 birds recorded on Tengiz lake from 19 August to 7 September 1979.
Common resident. Inhabits deciduous, mixed, riparian forest with bushes, rarer groves and gardens. In autumn – winter often occurs in reed-beds. In spring appears in breeding sites in March – April. Breeds in separate pairs at distance of several hundred meters one from another. Nest is built by female in tree holes or in nest-boxes for 2-11 days; nest is built from moss and bast and is lined with plenty of hair. Clutch of 7-13 eggs is laid in end of April to mid-June. Only female incubates clutch for 11-13 days, male sometimes bring her the food. Both parents feed juveniles which fledge at age 16-21 days old, in early June to end of July. Rears two broods per season. Autumn dispersal begins in end of August. Mass migration in flocks of 20-50 birds observed in second half of September in lower reach of Ural valley.
